Solana Shanghai Event Too Popular to Exist, Reports Event Nobody Was Allowed Into

Registrations quadrupled overnight past the cap filed with local authorities, so the event was postponed on the morning it was due to start. Officers were reportedly on hand to help with the not-attending.

Satire This article is fiction. Any resemblance to sane reality is coincidental.

This is satire. The facts in it are real and sourced below; the jokes are ours.

SHANGHAI — In what organisers are calling a triumph of community engagement, the Shanghai stop of the Solana Accelerate China tour was so successful that it could not take place.

The event at the Shangri-La Hotel was due to open on the morning of Friday, October 16, as the first of four cities on the tour. Instead it was postponed shortly before it began. According to Cointelegraph and Solana Compass, Solana Foundation president Lily Liu later explained on X that publicity had caused registrations to quadruple overnight, “far exceeding the event cap we had registered with local authorities,” and that the event was postponed “in order to comply with local requirements.”

A very well-attended pavement

Attendees told a slightly different story. According to BeInCrypto and The Crypto Times, people at the scene reported several law enforcement officers outside the venue and said guests were kept waiting outside for more than an hour. The South China Morning Post reported that social media posts showed local police at the venue. The first email sent to registered guests, according to the SCMP, mentioned only “last-minute logistical considerations.”

Our sources in the queue confirm that the logistics were considered. Thoroughly.

Industry analysts praised the format. “Most conferences struggle with no-shows,” said an imaginary event planner we made up for this paragraph. “Solana achieved a 100% no-show rate while still getting everyone to turn up. That is product-market fit.”

The office with the view

The timing added to the comedy. The postponement came days after Solana executives showed off a new Shanghai office and what the SCMP called a splashy marketing campaign in the city. Liu herself wrote: “We put Solana on the big screen because that’s the big heart Solana has for the Chinese community.” Mainland China has banned crypto trading since 2021 and prohibits a range of crypto services, though blockchain technology itself remains legal. In February the People’s Bank of China and seven other agencies added new restrictions, according to Cointelegraph.

Putting a crypto brand on the big screen in Shanghai and then being surprised by official interest is a bit like parking a Ferrari on a double yellow line and being shocked by the warden. The car may be lovely. The warden is not looking at the car.

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao called the episode “sad to see” and asked whether the organisers really did not know local policies, BeInCrypto reported. He noted that a Solana event in Shenzhen was also cut short in October 2025 over capacity and public-safety concerns, making Shanghai the second Solana gathering in China disrupted within a year.

Coming soon, possibly

The tour’s other stops were listed as Hangzhou on Sunday, Shenzhen on Tuesday and Beijing on Thursday. Liu signed off with “See you soon!” No new date for Shanghai has been announced.

Event organisers everywhere are taking notes. The new playbook for China appears to be: book the hotel, register the cap, put your logo on the big screen, and then hope that nobody reads the big screen.

In fairness to Solana, very few blockchain projects can say demand for their event was high enough to need a policing plan. The Daily Snark offers no view on any token, which is just as well, because we were also stuck outside.
